Bassets Now Rule Everything Here at the Greene Acre

Before bassets we had dachshunds in our family.  The tables below should explain a little...

Bassets are underlined with current residents in red

History of Basset Hound Place at the Greene Acre

suzy.jpg
1976 - Suzie (basset  hound) came from a friend in Dayton, Ohio
Already had 2 red  dachshunds at that time - BoBo & Gretchen
Moved to Florida - 1977 - Added black male dachshund - Leo
Being from Ohio, we didn't know about infected mosquitoes causing heartworms here in Florida way back then...
Our entire dachshund family left us for the rainbow bridge
Suzie lasted a little longer as an only dog...
2 years with big fenced yard and no dogs

Grass looked great, but very lonely with no dogs...

Bassethoundplace at the Greene Acre only started as such after the next group of
hounds joined the family.

Josh was still in the clinic when friends came with yet another basset hound for us to take in

Friends from church dumped Little Bitty Maggie off at our house after taking her away from their son
The county dog pound called and offered us Lucy.  She was due to be put to sleep the next day

Buffy came next.  Unknown to us, she was terminally ill when our vets wanted to give her a good ending to her life.  She only lasted 3 weeks with our pack and broke our hearts.

After Buffy made her way to the bridge, arguments started...

Zack wanted to replace Maggie Sue as leader of our pack...

Little Bitty Maggie did not like Lucy and told us so...

Zack went back home to his daddy after almost 2 years here

Little Bitty Maggie moved to another home in a
town 2 miles south of here

Momma
Maggie Sue
left for the
bridge at
14&1/2...
Rosie stayed
with us two
more years

Charlie stopped here on his way to the pound and stayed 2 years before boing to the bridge
cleo.jpg
A close neighbor who knew of our love for bassets "donated" Cleo to our pack

Charlie was along when we attended our first ever Basset Hound Picnic in Tampa
Soon after
that picnic,
Knee-Hi
was added
to our gang
the first
lemon &
white basset
we had ever
seen.

Adopted from Suncoast Basset Rescue, Knee-Hi was a sweet old soul who was a friend to all
A trip to Florida City (south of Miami) let us visit the Miami-Dade Shelter.  Since things had to be according to their policies, we were homeless in Miami one night in order to:
lilly.jpg
Rescue Lilly who was estimated to be 10 years old  Now we had a partner for Knee-Hi
Lilly had
pneumonia
 by the time
we got her
home from
   Miami after
 being spayed
lillyclinic.jpg
She spent 5 days in intensive care at the local vet clinic to recover
Problems started when Lilly began to get well...  She and Cleo disagreed over who would be the dominamt female
Before the problems escalated to intolerable,we started  taking pairs of our bassets to local area nursing homes and assisted living facilities

It was in July of 2001 that our "Therapy Bassets" began their new carreers...  Of course, Charlie was the inspiration behind that choice...
Our 3 pairs were:
Big Boys - Chip & Charlie
Gentle Couple - Josh & Lucy
Little Old Ladies - Knee-Hi & Lilly
Only Chip is left here now...
